The leather industry is one of the most polluting in fashion. But not all leather comes with the same environmental footprint. Distinguishing the leather that meets documented standards from the leather that does not requires specific knowledge. Here is what to look for.
The problem with unverified leather
Most leather in India carries no independent environmental certification. Brands self-declare their leather as "eco-friendly" without documentation. Without certification, a buyer cannot know whether the tannery discharged hazardous chemicals, whether workers were paid fairly, or whether the leather itself is safe for skin contact.
GRS Certified Recycled Leather
The Global Recycled Standard verifies that a material contains the claimed percentage of recycled content — and that this content is traced at every supply chain stage.
FountainEarth's GRS Certified Recycled Leather is 50% post-consumer leather waste, 25% recycled polyester, 25% PU. The certification is issued by an independent body — not a self-declaration. Used across the bags and travel collection.
LWG Certified Natural Leather
The Leather Working Group audits tanneries on six environmental performance areas: water, chemicals, energy, waste, compliance, and traceability. FountainEarth sources exclusively from LWG-rated tanneries. This is the leather in every belt and wallet.
OEKO-TEX, SA8000, and ZDHC
OEKO-TEX Standard 100 tests for 100+ harmful substances and certifies safety for skin contact. SA8000 certifies ethical labour standards at manufacturing facilities. ZDHC certifies that manufacturing wastewater meets hazardous chemical discharge standards.
