Our Materials
We Don't Claim Sustainability. We Certify It.
Anyone can write the word sustainable on a product page. We chose a different standard.
Every material FountainEarth uses is verified by an independent third-party certification body — audited, documented, and traceable. Not a self-declaration. Not a marketing claim. A credential that has to be earned, maintained, and renewed.
Six certifications. Four material types. One principle: if we cannot certify it, we do not use it.
Our Four Materials
1. GRS Certified Recycled Leather
Used in: All bags and travel accessories Certifying body: Global Recycled Standard (GRS)
Our recycled leather begins as waste — offcuts and off-grade leather that would otherwise be discarded. That waste is collected, processed, and reconstituted into a material that meets the same structural demands as virgin leather. Then it is certified.
Composition: 50% post-consumer leather waste · 25% recycled polyester · 25% PU
GRS certification verifies two things: that the material contains the exact percentage of recycled content claimed, and that this content is traced at every stage of the supply chain — from waste collection to finished product. No gaps. No assumptions.
Products made with GRS Certified Recycled Leather carry the same Lifetime Repair Service and 1-Year Warranty as every other leather product we make. Recycled does not mean compromised.
2. LWG Certified Natural Leather
Used in: All belts, all wallets, laptop sleeve, travel pouch Certifying body: Leather Working Group (LWG)
Natural leather has a complicated environmental history. The tanning process — if done without accountability — can discharge hazardous chemicals, consume excessive water, and leave a supply chain no one can trace.
LWG certification changes that accountability structure. The Leather Working Group independently audits tanneries across six environmental performance areas:
- Water management — how tannery wastewater is treated before discharge
- Chemical management — which chemicals are used and how they are handled and stored
- Energy usage — consumption levels and efficiency standards
- Waste management — solid waste reduction and disposal practices
- Compliance — adherence to local and international environmental law
- Traceability — the ability to trace leather back to the source hide
A tannery must pass an independent audit to receive an LWG rating. FountainEarth sources exclusively from LWG-rated tanneries. The leather in your belt or wallet is not just genuine — it is traceable.
3. USDA Certified Biobased — Bamboo Leather
Used in: Select specialty products Certifying body: United States Department of Agriculture (USDA)
Composition: 66% bamboo fibre · 34% PU
Bamboo is one of the fastest-growing plants on earth — harvested without uprooting the plant, requiring no pesticides, and regenerating in months rather than years. The USDA Biobased certification verifies the percentage of plant-derived content in the material and confirms it meets the programme's biobased content standard.
At 66% bamboo fibre, this material carries significantly less fossil-fuel dependency than conventional synthetic alternatives.
4. USDA Certified Biobased — Cactus Leather
Used in: Select specialty products Certifying body: United States Department of Agriculture (USDA)
Composition: 66% cactus fibre · 34% PU
Cactus requires no irrigation beyond natural rainfall and no additional land clearing to cultivate. The mature leaves are harvested — the plant continues to grow — and the fibre is extracted and processed into a leather alternative. USDA certification verifies the bio-based content percentage at the same independent standard as the bamboo material.
Our Six Certifications
Every certification below is issued by an independent body — not by us.
1. GRS — Global Recycled Standard Verifies recycled content percentage and full supply chain traceability of recycled materials. Applied to all FountainEarth bags and travel accessories.
2. LWG — Leather Working Group Independent audit of tannery environmental practices across water, chemicals, energy, waste, compliance, and traceability. Applied to all FountainEarth belts, wallets, and natural leather accessories.
3. USDA Biobased Certifies the percentage of plant-derived biological content in a material. Applied to FountainEarth bamboo leather (66%) and cactus leather (66%).
4. OEKO-TEX Standard 100 Tests finished products for over 100 harmful substances — including heavy metals, pesticides, formaldehyde, and pH levels — and certifies safety for skin contact. Every FountainEarth leather product that touches your skin has passed this test.
5. SA8000 — Social Accountability International Certifies that manufacturing facilities meet international ethical labour standards — covering child labour, forced labour, working hours, fair wages, health and safety, and the right to collective bargaining. The people who make FountainEarth products work in independently audited conditions.
6. ZDHC — Zero Discharge of Hazardous Chemicals Certifies that manufacturing wastewater meets stringent standards for hazardous chemical discharge. What leaves our production facilities meets the ZDHC Manufacturing Restricted Substances List — protecting waterways, ecosystems, and communities near our manufacturing operations.
Why Six Certifications Matter
Each certification addresses a different layer of the supply chain. Together, they cover the full journey of a FountainEarth product — from the raw material at the tannery, through the manufacturing facility, to the finished product that reaches you.
A brand can claim sustainability without any of these. We chose to earn them instead.
Made in Bharat
FountainEarth products are designed in Gurugram, Haryana and crafted in Delhi. Our manufacturing facilities hold SA8000 ethical labour certification and ZDHC chemical compliance — because what goes into a product matters as much as what the product is made of.
We are a Startup India recognised brand, fully bootstrapped, and built on the conviction that sustainable materials and honest pricing are not opposing forces. Every rupee you spend on a FountainEarth product goes further — ethically, environmentally, and in terms of how long the product lasts.
Every Material. Every Product. Every Time.
