How to Care for Leather Belts to Make Them Last Years

Leather belt care does not need to be complicated. Four basic habits — storing correctly, cleaning gently, conditioning occasionally, and rotating between belts — will keep an LWG Certified leather belt in excellent condition for years. This is how.

Storage: hang straight or roll gently

Leather holds shape. If a leather belt is left folded, buckled through trousers on the floor, or compressed in a drawer, it will retain the shape you left it in. Hang your belt straight on a hook or peg. If space is limited, roll it gently — buckle to the outside — and store it flat. Keep it away from direct sunlight and damp areas.

Cleaning: soft cloth, mild soap, nothing more

A soft, dry cloth removes surface dust. For marks: a slightly damp cloth with a drop of mild soap, wiped gently across the mark, then wiped clean with a second damp cloth, then left to air dry. No hairdryer. No radiator.

Strong cleaning products — acetone, bleach, alcohol-based sprays — strip the natural oils from leather and accelerate cracking. Mild soap and a damp cloth is the maximum a leather belt should need.

Conditioning: twice a year

Leather dries out over time. A leather conditioner applied with a soft cloth, worked in gently, and left to absorb replenishes natural oils and prevents cracking. Twice a year is sufficient for a belt in regular use.

Rotation and the Lifetime Warranty

Rotating between two belts gives each one recovery time and extends both their lives. A reversible leather belt from FountainEarth effectively gives you two belts in one — both sides developing an equal patina when rotated.
